I’ve been having a lot of trouble again with spam and viruses at MySpace. This isn’t the same exact thing that has happened to me but sounds like an extension of it. The problem I had was a pop-up that took me entirely off MySpace despite all of my blockers. In one instance, it attempted to appear to be my control panel and said that my personal information had been stolen. It showed me my IP address as “proof.” Another way it occurs is to bring a box up from your running applications toolbar which asks if you want to download a free malware program. It is very hard to close out of and the first time, my AVG picked up a trojan horse because I probably clicked something in my efforts to close it. After I got it cleaned up and deleted the friend and friend request that I believe gave it to me, it continued until I figured out that you can block MySpace from using your cookies with no ill effects. The option is in a tab in Internet Options under Security, Privacy or Content, I can’t recall which. It has not happened again since I blocked MySpace from using my cookies.
Here’s another way that it’s occurring:
After AVG detected the trojan, I scanned with SpyBot and it found 15 threats that were not there the day before. I remember that some of them were called Fastclick and Casalmedia.net. There’s another that clearly has tracker in the name but I can’t remember it. If you see any of these in the bar at the bottom of your screen while you’re on MySpace, run your malware checkers immediately.
Alicia Keys is one of my favorite artists and it pains me to have to delete her from my friends list.
Hackers Are At It Again and This Time, It’s MySpace
In addition to the above two blogs, I saw literally hundreds of blogs about the Alicia Keys situation and the supposed malware removal thing that I’ve been seeing. An individual on a message board reported that his was a yellow triangle in the taskbar but other than that it was identical to what’s been going on with mine. If it comes up for you, don’t even try to close it. It opens about 3 boxes/windows and you could end up clicking on something trying to close them - they won’t. Just hold the button in on your hard drive to shut down.
